Community Service Requirements
All students must participate in PRE-APPROVED community service for graduation from Sharpsville High School. Pre-approval comes from the High School Principal or a project pre-approved by the principal. If you have any questions please call the high school office.
The requirements are:
| 32 hours for graduation |
| Out of school service/after school hours |
| No pay is given for service performed |
| Must be for a non-profit organization |
| Project sheet must be submitted forpre-approval |
| Volunteer agreement must be signed and on file with a parent/student/supervisor signature |
| Students begin to accumulate hours during the summer after completing 8th grade. |
| Any student enrolled at SHS must complete community service regardless of how long they have been enrolled. |
SENIORS ONLY can use 15 hours of community service to replace 1 activity. It is recommended that the service be completed at the same agency (hence equal to 1 activity). These hours are to be recorded on a special blue form available in the high school office.
OBJECTIVES:
Make connections between what they are learning from books and what they need to know to function as productive members of a healthy community.
SERVICE WILL HELP YOUTH:
| Gain a sense of stake in the community. |
| Gain a sense of responsibility and self-worth. |
| Gain important skills such as cooperative work, decision-making, problem solving, planning, etc. |
| Gain exposure to a variety of positive role models and career possibilities. |
| Increase their sense of control over their environment. |
| Interact with people of other ages and backgrounds, spurring their own personal growth. |
TRAINING:
Middle School Family & Consumer Sciences class grade 8. Requirements and forms are reviewed. Middle school students also learn communication, decision-making, problem solving, and planning skills necessary to choose projects and satisfactorily perform service.
