Whatis the difference between community service & service-learning?
Service Learning combines service to the community with classroom studies in a way that improves student learning and strengthens the community. Students work with community members, classmates, and teachers to meet real community needs while learning a variety of subjects including math, social studies, English, as well as civic responsibility and effective citizenship.

How many community service hours do I need for graduation from Sharpsville High School?
A total of 32 hours.  Hours can be applied to future years. Don't wait!  It is a requirement for graduation.

Where can I serve?
Check the list on the opportunities page on the website or located on the wall inside of the high school office or the bulletin boards by the cafeteria and the office. Possibilities are endless but it is your responsibility to read the bulletins, listen toannouncements, and read the local newspaper for community events.

When can I begin?
You can begin as soon as you leave the school building at the end of 8th grade and you are officially a freshman.

When can I serve?
Service can be performed before or after school hours, evenings, weekends, weekdays when we don't have school (ex. Monday holidays), and anytime during the summer. It can be an ongoing service with flexible days and hours or a one time event.

Where do I find the information I need?
In room 99c, Mrs. Brest has current opportunities.
In the high school office on the wall is a file holder with copies of current opportunities. The yellow volunteer form you need for pre-approval which should be turned in to the office after you are finished with your volunteer opportunity is located in the office and in room 99c. Bulletin boards, the guidance office and the newspaper are also good places to look for information as well as this web site.

What does pre-approved mean?
It means thatbefore you perform the serviceyou need to fill out the yellow sheet in the office and have it signed by the high school principal. Sometimes a group project may be pre-approved by the principal. In that case you would sign up in the office or with Mrs. Brest and not have to get the pre-approval.
