SUCCESSFUL 'BUSINESS TRIP' FOR MS FOOTBALL MERCER - The Sharpsville Middle School Blue Devils (2-0) took care of business in the county seat, coming away with a hard-fought 8-0 victory over Mercer (0-2) in a contest that remained scoreless until the final moments.
Matthew Baker’s one-yard plunge with 3:59 to play capped a 65-yard drive and was the game’s only score, set up by a 35-yard strike up the right sideline from Cooper Nelson to Jud Weiser. Following Baker’s touchdown, Nelson rolled right and found Max Adkins for the two-point conversion to set the final margin.
For the second time in as many weeks, the MS Blue Devils’ recipe for victory called for a late touchdown followed by a red zone turnover to secure the win. This time, linebacker Anthony Heutsche forced a fourth-down fumble deep in Sharpsville territory, with teammate Dom Pecorelli securing the loose pigskin and clinching the contest for Sharpsville.
Baker led the Blue Devil ground attack with 61 yards on 11 carries, while Nelson added 28 yards rushing and 44 through the air. Eli Thomas added 16 yards on six attempts, while RJ Spatara had two receptions for the Blue Devils.
Thomas led the Devil defenders with six tackles, while Heutsche’s five tackles included two in the backfield. Baker added an interception for the Blue Devils.
